Over one hundred and twenty years ago each of the World's Countries set their own clock. The time was set to noon to when the sun was at its highest, directly over each individual city. So, for example, in New York it would be 6:00PM and 6:12PM in Boston.
This way of setting the time work well until transportation and communication became popular. So in the late 1870s Canadian railway planner and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming thought about a more uniformed way of setting the time. This way was through time zones and in 1883 there we in use all across America and Canada.
Then, at a conference in Washington, D.C. in 1884 it was agreed that this new time zone system would be put in place all across the World.
Even today, this system of time zones is still in place.
