It's all travellers' worst nightmare - the airline loses your luggage. So, should you experience Prestwick lost luggage then read our helpful guide.

Prestwick Lost Luggage ...

What a nightmare start to your holiday - you arrive safely at your destination only your baggage doesn't. Given today's computer tracking systems you'd think that Prestwick lost luggage would be a thing of the past, but sadly it's still fairly common.

So this guide gives advice on what to do should you experience either Prestwick lost luggage, Prestwick delayed baggage, Prestwick stolen baggage or Prestwick damaged baggage.

To begin with you need to contact your airline to report your lost, stolen, damaged or delayed baggage. Use this box to find your airline's contact details.

Prestwick Lost Luggage - where to start...

Each airline is responsible for the security and management of your luggage, as set out by the British Airports Authority.

  • As soon as you realise your luggage is lost report it to the Lost Baggage desk at the airport
In the first instance you will have to give a description of your lost luggage along with the contents. You'll then be issued with a tracking number so you can, by either phone or via the Internet, track the progress of tracing your missing bags.

Sometimes, in the event of a claim for lost luggage you can be asked to provide receipts for the contents and cases you are claiming for. Then the airline will make a decision on the value of the claim and you'll be offered the compensation. However, like most insurance claims the amount offered rarely meets the claim value.

Most airlines don't actually declare your luggage as officially lost until it's been missing for over 21 days. Until then it's considered to be 'missing'. After the 21 days has passed, and your luggage hasn't been found, you are able to put in your claim.

Many airlines say that they are limited by the Montreal Convention to offering travellers around £800 per person in compensation for lost luggage that states they are responsible for your luggage.

Changing Flights

If you have to change flights during your journey, and you only have to check your luggage in once you are able to make a claim for lost luggage against any one of the airlines involved in carrying it. They will of course blame one another. Your best bet is to start with the first airline and get proof it got past onto the next plane. If they refuse to handle your claim they are in breach of the Montreal Convention.

Limited Release Tags - LRTs

It may be that when you check-in certain items of luggage that the airline affixes an LRT - this is so it removes any liability of damage from the airline. LRTs are applied to items such as sporting equipment, musical instruments and pushchairs.

However, if they agreed to carry your luggage in the first place, regardless of the LRT they are duty bound to take care of your luggage, as set out clearly by the Montreal Convention.

Prestwick Delayed Baggage ...

The Montreal Convention says that a passenger's baggage is only 'delayed' during the first 21 days.

So during this time it could be your airline offers you an immediate one-off payment to cover any emergency purchases like underwear and toiletries.

Or you may be offered a set amount of money per day, up to a set amount of days. Or you might be asked to purchase the emergency goods and you'll be reimbursed when you present the airline with the receipts.

Once the 21 days has passed your luggage status goes to lost and you are then able to make a claim.

Prestwick Damaged Baggage...

When working through the value of your claim for Prestwick damaged baggage you'll find that most airlines make a payment that includes depreciation.

Or, if it's just a claim, being dealt with at the airport, as just your cases are damaged you'll be offered a replacement from the airline's store cupboard.

Prestwick Stolen Baggage ...

When items have been stolen from your cases then it's very difficult to prove, and therefore claim. Because of this you should always try and use the highest quality cases you can afford.

Also, make sure you haven't packed anything in your case that the airline considered to be “items unacceptable as baggage” in their terms and conditions, as any compensation claim will be refused.

Equally, most airlines' terms and conditions say that they don't accept responsibility for any such perishable or valuable goods, like for example camcorders, cameras, mobile phones or jewellery.

Therefore always carry any valuable goods in your hand luggage.

Advice & Tips ...

You'll never completely guarantee that your luggage won't be lost by your airline but there are a couple of things you can do to help should you have to claim:

  • Making a list setting out everything you've packed can help in the event of a claim

  • If your luggage goes missing and your address labels have fallen off then a piece of paper within the cases with your contact details on will help trace them back to you

  • If you have very valuable pieces of luggage to transport consider services like Flymycase which will fly your luggage anywhere in the world

  • All receipts for your holiday items should be kept safe until after you've travelled

  • Carry all valuable goods like jewellery, cameras etc. in your hand luggage as they might not be covered by the airline in a claim as viewed as 'unacceptable baggage items'

  • Always travel with travel insurance that covers both you and your luggage - visit our I Travel Insurance Page for more unofficial information

  • By using distinctive and brightly coloured luggage you can try and prevent other passengers from mistaking your bags as their own, and it can put off thieves!
