Getting Ready To Leave ...

To leave your home safe and secure is easy and gives you total peace of mind that you aren't advertising to the whole World that your home is standing empty for weeks on end.

Start off by using these general tips on preparing to leave for Prestwick Airport, especially when you think that almost half of all break-ins happen when a home is left standing empty.

  • Make sure your newspaper and milk deliveries are cancelled.

  • Leave ordering any packages that will arrive Recorded Delivery or similar until you get back - otherwise they will be returned to the sender if not collected from the Post Office within one week.

  • Move any appointments or meetings. This way you'll avoid any cancellation charges for non attendance too.

  • Arrange for someone to pop into your home from time to time whilst you're away to remove post from the doorstep and t water your pot plants indoors and your garden if it's in the middle of Summer.

  • Get rid of any perishable items in your fridge and cupboards.

  • For safety switch off all your plug sockets like your TV, computer etc.

  • In the Summer switch off your hot water and central heating and in the Winter lower the temperature and reduce the time both are on for (but don't turn off as it could damage your pipes if it's freezing cold).

  • Arrange for your pets to be looked after - book them into a cattery or kennel, packing some of their favourite toys and treats. Or arrange for a friend to house/pet sit - making sure they have meet plenty of times first.

Security Tips For Your Home...

Going on holiday is so exciting, and we plan it down to the very last detail. So why don't we plan the security of our homes to the same degree? Security tips are so simple to implement and hugely effective. So why risk it, especially when you think that for many of us our home is our most valuable purchase, and it's contents our most precious.

Use these simple to use, at a glance, home security tips and protect your home to the best of your ability.

  Top Ten Security Tips
  1. Automatic Lighting Make your home look lived in by fitting timers to your internal lights. This will confuse potential burglars as they'll think someone is at home.
  2. Post Family or friends should be asked to pop by to pick up any post (or free newspapers etc.) that have built up on your doorstep and hanging from your letterbox. Otherwise this is a real give-away that no-one is home.

If no-one can pop in arrange for Royal Mail's Keepsafe service to run whilst you're away, it's stores your post for two months.

3. Deliveries Make sure all your daily/weekly deliveries like milk and papers are cancelled.
4. Baggage Tags: Your return luggage label shouldn't be filled in until you are checking-in for your return flight. Otherwise any one seeing your baggage will know you are away, for how long and where you live making your home an easy target.
5. House Checking: See if neighbours, friends or family can drop by to check on your home and also to make it look like someone is living there - ask them to park on the drive, and pull curtains. If your drive will be standing empty ask a neighbour with a spare car to park permanently on your drive.

It's also worth leaving your contact details with them too, just in case of an emergency.
6. Neighbourhood Watch: For extra security and protection think about joining your local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. To see if there is one operated in your area look at their website - www.neighbourhoodwatch.net
7. Valuable Items: Any valuable items or important paperwork that you might have could be left with a trusted friend or family, or in the safe at your Bank.

Desirables like TVs, DVDs and stereos that can be seen from outside should be moved.

Make sure your home and contents insurance has not expired and that it provides the cover you need.
8. Alarm:  Arrange for a local friend, family member or neighbour to be a key holder during your trip away so your Security Company can get in contact with someone in emergency (or false alarm).
9. Outdoor Storage: Put expensive or precious things stored in your shed in your house i.e. bikes, power tools and golf clubs.
10. Locks: Go around your whole house before you leave checking all the locks on windows and doors.

For even extra protection for your home arrange for your local police force to check your home for security weak spots. They will offer top security tips and suggestions for you.

Packing Tips - main baggage & hand luggage ...

When you are packing your baggage and hand luggage do remember that all airlines have weight limits and that UK Customs have certain items that are either restricted or prohibited - visit the Security section of this website.

As a rule, most airlines have a luggage allowance of 32kgs/70lbs per bag, per person. Do check with your airline, although in many instances their luggage allowance will be shown on your flight ticket.

When needing to take additional pieces of baggage on-board you need to check in advance with your airline regarding their policies for excess luggage. Also check if you are carrying oversized, large or outsized baggage too. If you are carrying excess luggage you will have to pay a fine for the baggage to travel and you'll have to pack it into smaller bags to distribute the weight. Or, if you cannot afford the fine you will have to remove the excess luggage and it will be destroyed.

There are also limits regarding your hand luggage - both the size and weight - again, check with your airline for their own restrictions on hand luggage.

Once at check-in you'll be asked a variety of questions about to your baggage - such as who packed the bags and what it contains. You will then need to pass through several security checks before being allowed into the departure lounge and finally onto the aircraft.
