| When travelling with your mobile phone abroad make sure you've contacted your Network provider and checked out the following: |
|
| |
- That your mobile phone is enabled for 'International roaming' so you can actually use your phone overseas. This can take up to 14 days to activate so do it in plenty of time.
- Will your mobile phone abroad actually work? In America you'd need a tri-band handset for example.
- How much International roaming calls cost you - and check just before you leave in case they have gone up unexpectedly.
- Are there any deals on that include overseas calls that you can take advantage of?

| Ask your Network provider if it's possible to swap onto a tariff that includes international calls on a cheaper monthly fee. But do check if you'll have to be on this for a long time -not cost effective if you aren't travelling much this year. |

Look into using an alternative International SIM card when travelling with your mobile phone as it can be lot cheaper and convenient to do so. An alternative SIM card is good when you are locked into a tariff with your Network provider. Do check, if buying a card however that it doesn't expire after a certain out of time.
Buy an International SIM card at airports or in some UK retailers. |

Activating Your Mobile Phone When Abroad ... |

Once you've landed and you're allowed to turn your mobile phone on, do so as usual. Your mobile will be diverted over to a local phone transmitter that routes your calls from the Country you are travelling to.
The reason you can pay so much for using your mobile phone abroad is because, for example, if you're in France calling a friend who's also in France, even though your phone is routed to a local transmitter, it's routed back to the UK so your call travels a huge 1,800 miles.
So do carefully look into the right option for you when travelling with your mobile phone - whether it's a monthly tariff including overseas calls if you're a frequent traveller or an alternative SIM card. |

- Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying

Be sure to have made a note of your phone's IMEI/serial number, keeping it in a separate place to where you'll keep your phone. On the same piece of paper also write down your actual mobile number and your Network provider's customer services number (see above). Also ask your Network provider if they need any other information - password or pin number - to cancel or block your phone, this is so if your mobile on holiday is lost or stolen you can cancel it immediately.
